It’s wonderful when effort is rewarded: Harmanpreet, a star defender, on his FIH nomination
Star defender Harmanpreet Singh described being nominated for the FIH Player of the Year Award this year as a tremendous honour and a reward of his years of dedication to the national hockey team.
Harmanpreet earned the top prize, his first in the 2020–21 competition, and was a member of the team that won silver at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this year. He also won bronze in the Asian Champions Trophy in Dhaka in 2021. “Being nominated for the FIH Player of the Year Award once more is a great honour for me. It feels fantastic when your hard work is rewarded through the FIH Star Awards, Harmanpreet was quoted as saying in a press release. I have always tried to offer my best and contribute to the team’s success.
Additionally, he said, “I would like to congratulate all the other nominees in the Indian Men’s and Women’s Teams.”
The 26-year-old competes for the renowned prize in a number of categories alongside several other Indian hockey players from the men’s and women’s teams, as well as the coaches of the respective teams.
PR Sreejesh (‘Goalkeeper of the Year’ Men), Savita (‘Goalkeeper of the Year’ Women), Mumtaz Khan (‘Rising Star of the Year’ Men), Graham Reid (‘Coach of the Year’ Men), and Janneke Schopman (‘Coach of the Year’ Women) are a few of the well-known names. Harmanpreet clarified that the fact that hockey players from India are frequently nominated for the top honours shows that the nation’s sport has advanced substantially over the past few years and is expanding quickly. “Last time, we won every award, and this time, we’ve been nominated for the majority of them, demonstrating our stellar performance over the previous two years.
The Indian Men’s and Women’s Teams have developed really quickly, and I believe we can continue to improve in the future. For Indian hockey, these are really exciting times, according to Harmanpreet.
The Punjabi player emphasised that winning in the next FIH Hockey Pro League is a top priority to make more team improvements.
“We are anticipating our FIH Hockey Pro League 2022–23 games with great anticipation. After the CWG was over, we focused on a few things, Harmanpreet remarked.
“I hope we can continue to develop as a team and become an even greater side. We came in third place in the most recent FIH Hockey Pro League season. In the following tournament, we’ll try to improve our performance, he remarked.
