5. Pit-road speeding penalties
In 2016, NASCAR decided to add more timing loops to pit road to catch more drivers speeding when making stops. Like highways during the holiday season, there were a lot more tickets given out because of the increased enforcement. Denny Hamlin led the charge by hitting double-digit speeding penalties in 2016.
Overall, NASCAR averaged close to four pit-road speeding penalties per race, definitely affecting the outcome of a few finishes this season.
4. Truck Series fights
Compared to previous years, the Premier Series was rather quiet when it came to drivers getting into scuffles. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series made up for it. First, Spencer Gallagher and John Wes Townley got into a full wrestling match at Gateway Motorsports Park.
Then, Cole Custer went for a Ray Lewis tackle on John Hunter Nemechek after Nemechek drove Custer into the wall heading to the finish of the Chevrolet Silverado 250 at Canadian Motorsports Park.
The high intensity of the Truck Series made it must-see TV throughout the 2016 season.
3. Sprint All-Star race
Sprint and NASCAR decided to try to spice up the All-Star race this year with different rules for making multiple pit stops, which led to Chase Elliott causing a huge crash, and a shuffling of the field that confused everyone.
Not many were happy with the outcome of the event, which included Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen pulling a random number to decide how many teams had to pit before the final segment.
While the action overall was exciting, the drivers didn’t have a clue what was going on. Dale Jr. remarked, “I was pretty confused right up until it was 13 laps to go, and then I knew, well, we’re racing from here to the end, and this is all the normal rules.”
Tony Stewart added, “This is the most screwed up All-Star Race I’ve ever been a part of,” he said. “I’m mad as hell because I don’t know how they officiated this from start to finish.”
The race was clearly one of the most perplexing All-Star competitions the sport has ever put on.
